Located in the southwest of the Russian River Valley, a little inland, near the town of Sebastopol, this vineyard is planted by the late Japanese Umino in Gold Ridge soil with good drainage. The grapes are cool and elegant. Aged for 14 months in French barrels (50% new barrels). Usually, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is full-bodied with a strong fruit flavor, but Umino Vineyard suppresses tannin extraction, emphasizes transparency, and has a taste that brings out the natural acidity.
Vintage Information
An unusually dry winter and mild spring resulted in early bud and flowering.
The mild weather continued through the summer, allowing the phenols to mature fully.
There was little rain throughout the season, resulting in smaller berries and clusters than average and lower yields.
This gives the wine a deep, concentrated flavour.
Technical information
Clones: 115, 459
Winemaking: 75% stainless steel tanks / 25% fermentation in new French barrels, aged for 14 months in French barrels (50% new). Unfiltered, unfined.
Tasting Comments
Typically, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is one of the more expensive wines in California, with a rich, full-bodied flavor and fruitiness.
However, at Noria, we have created a Pinot Noir that reduces tannin extraction, emphasizes transparency, and brings out the natural acidity.
Field Information
The field was planted in 1996 by Dave Umino, a third-generation Japanese-American.
It is located southwest of Sebastopol at the top of Blue Shear Valley.
This is the coolest area of the Russian River Valley, with cold ocean winds blowing through the vineyards.
The Gold Ridge soil is a fine sandy loam that drains well and naturally keeps the trees in check.
It produces exceptional Pinot Noirs that combine extraordinary fruit expression with unparalleled finesse.
