vintage notebook

In Cinema 2018, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel bring out the best in each other. The baked spice from Zinfandel and the firm tannin structure from Cabernet Sauvignon are evident. With so many options, it's a fun blended wine to make. The hard part is finding the right Zinfandel to match the right Cabernet Sauvignon lot. Lots of jammy nuances of red fruit at first and a solid mid-palate. Cabernet Sauvignon reveals ripe plum flavors. A well-balanced blend that doesn't tire you out. The finish is long with sweet nuances derived from American oak.

Director's Cut Cinema blends Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. At Francis Coppola, we have been making single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel wines for years, so we know the wide range of character of different selections and how they work well when blended.

Winery information

“Winemaking and filmmaking, I think, are two great art forms that emerged in the evolution of California. Grapes, if it's a movie, it's the script and the acting of the actors, the winemaker ferments and blends this raw material, it's okay in this barrel, it's not in that one, the film director does the same thing, from the casting Costumes, editing, music, and more.In both cases, you have to start with the best material – whether it's the land or the script.”
- Francis Ford Coppola

The intersection of winemaking and filmmaking in Sonoma

In the world of cinema, the term "director's cut" is understood to represent the creative vision of the filmmaker. The 'Director's Cut' series of wines at Francis Ford Coppola Winery epitomize Sonoma as created by director Corey Beck through his own unique rendition. The unique label wrapped around the bottle is a strip of film that was used in an early motion picture device called the zoetrope. Using a replica of Francis' private film collection, a different design was chosen for each grape variety.

In 2017, it was also selected as an official winery for the Academy Awards, and at events related to the Academy Awards from 2017 to 2019, Francis Ford Coppola Winery's wines, including this director's cut, were served.

Tasting notes

The Cabernet provides ripe plum fruit. The blend is well balanced and does not overwhelm the senses. The finish is lengthy, with a recognizable American oak sweetness.
